NAHJ CHICAGO OFFERS ITS

LARGEST SCHOLARSHIP EVER!

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists Chicago Chapter is excited to announce that we are offering our largest scholarship award ever!  $8,000!

This scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers in English or Spanish-language print, broadcast, digital or photojournalism.  Students attending four-year colleges and universities in Illinois are eligible to apply.  

The following criteria will be equally considered in the selection process:

  • Journalism Commitment: Students must demonstrate a sincere desire to pursue a career in journalism.
  • Academic Achievement: There is no minimum grade point average to qualify for NAHJ scholarships. However, academic performance will be considered.
  • Community Awareness: Applicants need to be aware of issues that face the Hispanic community and Latinos in the newsroom.
  • NAHJ Membership: Applicants much have an active student membership with the NAHJ Chicago chapter. Click here for membership services.

MATERIALS: Materials must be emailed to nahj.chi@gmail.com by October 7, 2024. 

  • All materials and attachments should be included in the same email. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 
  • Resume: One page resume listing your educational background, journalism related work history and internships, awards, & other scholarships.
  • School transcripts: A transcript is required from the most recent institution you have attended.
  • Financial Needs Statement: This part of the application asks for details on the applicant’s expenses and income.
  • Essay: Please submit a typed, double-spaced, 500-word essay focusing on why you are choosing a career in journalism given the current climate and/or why it is important to have Latinos in the newsroom.
  • Samples of your best work: These include print, digital, television, radio or photography. Please limit samples to three. Work Samples may be in English or Spanish and formatted for web viewing.  Video/Audio samples should be no longer than 3 minutes.
